Documentation for Suprscrn:
This is a small program to improve the video quality on the
Seequa computers. What it does is to set the video controller to
produce 9 lines in each character row and move the characters in
the character-generator RAM so that they are nicely centered in
this 9-line row. It also sets the controller to use interlaced
mode-- this makes characters on the screen much more solid, at
the price of increased flicker and jitter. I find it bearable,
because the sharper characters make up for it. If you are
sensitive to flickering screens, this program is not for you.
Also, lots of inverse-video area on the screen causes it to
jitter somewhat objectionably. But in my use of the computer, I
find it nice to have. This program should work with external
monitors, although I have not been able to test this. It would
work very well with a monitor with long-persistence phosphor,
such as the Apple /// monitor.
To use this program, it may be run from the DOS prompt or its
name placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. It should only be run
once. If it is run more than once, you'll be staring at
lowercase letters without descenders. Interesting, but not
useful.
This program is not perfect. The screen will look somewhat funny
after a Ctrl-Alt-Del or other similar restart of the computer.
The only easy way to cure this is to turn the computer off/on or
force a cold boot in some other way, so that the Seequa ROMS will
reload the character generator ROM. Also, some of the graphics
and line drawing characters do not run together properly when
using this program. These can all be fixed, but I have other
things I'd rather do. Ah, well, tasks for another day...
